Hey! Hey! We’re the Monkees!

Welcome back to the randomness and our fake band month! As I wrote yesterday, The Monkees are one of the first television bands to grab my attention.  The Monkees is a dorky, silly and full of schemes that would make Lucy Ricardo say…wow.

Regardless how dated the show is to modern audiences it still has its charms.  I have seen enough episodes to start having favorites.

Before I go into my favorites here are some things to keep in mind:

  • You can start watching anywhere. Not much of a plot line. Just make sure you know their names. They explain everything else.
  • The shows are chock full of random advertisements like Kellogg’s and aftershave. It is fun to find the references in all the episodes (ok. They are very blatant. At least television hides it better now).
  • Mike and Peter are my favorites so a good amount of my favorite episodes revolves around them.

Now that is out of the way, here are my top three favorite Monkee television episodes! Why only three? Do you want to be here all day? After you read this you should find the episodes to watch (cough youtube cough).

The Royal Flush – (September 12, 1966)

What is it about?

Davy saves a princess at the beach and learns that the princesses uncle is trying to kill her before her 18th birthday to become the king.  It is up to the guys to keep her Uncle Otto and his henchman from killing the princess and themselves!

Why this episode?

This episode has a ton of funny little sight gags running through it. It also has one of the weirdest surreal sword fight at the end that gets funnier the longer it goes on. Especially the way the guest react.  They are treating it like a baseball game including getting out some popcorn to watch!

My favorite gags are when the guys keep the uncles henchman distracted by running him around the beach so they can dig a hole for him to fall into later in the episode and trying to get the henchman to stand on the X so a safe could fall on his head.

It is also awesome people the show has a very satisfying ending. Sometimes episodes just end without any real closure. At the end the princess turns 18 and gets the uncle arrested.  Also enjoyed this episode because the princess wasn’t in love with Davy. It was a refreshing since from this point on…girls fall at his feet.

Monkees on the Line (March 27, 1967)

What is this one about?

The Monkees end up working for an answering service just so they can use the service for free. They are to follow only one rule, do NOT get involved with the clients. Mike comes across a suicidal caller. Obviously…they get involved with the clients. Chaos ensues.

Why is this awesome?

Not too many talk about this episode but I love it. This episode reminded me of one of my favorite musicals Bells are Ringing’. According to the Monkees TV Vault, I was not wrong. It was based on that movie.

I love the manic nature of the episode. It is fast paced and meant for you to try and keep up. That kept me interested in the episode.  The Monkees managed to stop someone from committing suicide, stopped a mobster and started a fight over a misdirected message! This episode relies on funny gags to pull itself through but my favorite one is when Micky asks the audience if he should push the red button on the wall after Davy says not too.

This episode never fails to make me laugh and even react when the cast breaks the fourth wall.

Fairy Tale – January 8, 1968

What is this one about?

A break from their format, the guys tell a story from Fairy Tale Land where Peter rescues a princess (which was played by Mike) from her fiancée (it is as silly and creative as it sounds).

Why is this one awesome?

This episode is a complete break from the regular format this show fell into by this point and they did such a great job breaking away.  The show was on one stage with a limited set because they went over budget with the previous episode. I find that when the means to tell a story are limited that is when the show shines.

All the guys playing different fairy tale characters makes you laugh so hard it will make you cry.  Even better when one of the other guys makes fun of their other characters they get very defensive. I love Mikes defense of the princess he plays. “She is a groovy chick…” The use of groovy alone.

Best gag to look out for? When the knights won’t stop eating so they end up giving them tables, chairs and even the set lights and cameras! They even had a sign to tell people where the mud was supposed to be!

I have so many more favorite episodes but this blog would be ten pages long! I highly suggest you go watch the show for yourselves if you haven’t before! *cough youtube cough*

That closes out Monkee week here at the random blog! Coming next week is another analysis of another great fake band!

Hint? ‘We all gonna hang…together….’

See you all next week and hope you enjoyed the Monkee week!

The randomness has ended. Go forth and do some good in the world.
