Welcome back to the randomness! On deck today?

Holly Madison: The Girl Next Door Has Gone Rouge

Yes. It may shock you. I do like to read. No. Scratch that. I LOVE to read. As I have gotten older, I have started venturing out of my tried and true favorite genres. Recently I have been obsessed with biographies, tell all and books that let me into a world I would never see.

That is why I was drawn to Holly Madison’s book, “Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny”. Well…part of the reason. I was a big fan of The Girls Next Door when I was in high school. I am definitely not the type to watch shows like that back then but I remember finding the women funny and the way it was advertised, it was fun and happy. I was also a teenager so by definition I did not have much in the way of taste.

I recently went looking for an episode to watch (E! does not seem to care that the shows full seasons are floating around the internet for free) and I found the whole thing odd and plastic.  Almost like, it was completely set up to make Playboy look better than it was.

After reading this book…I have a new respect for Holly Madison that I never expected to have.

I will not go into every point of the book (you can get great overviews of the book on any gossip site) because I want people to read this book for different reasons. There is one great lesson that permeates this book and that is what truly made me love this book and want others to read it too.

Lessons Learned

This book was about Holly Madison’s life before becoming Hef’s girlfriend, her time in the mansion, the television shows, the other boyfriends and finally finding her happiness.

There was a line that got me was at the end and it summed up the book beautifully:

Marriage and family are certainly beautiful parts of life, but I believe those things can truly be appreciated only when we find, love and respect ourselves first.

That is the true moral of this book.  This is not new. She is not the first one to come to this conclusion.  It is talked about in so many different genres. However, after seeing how low someone can get learn that lesson? It hits home. I am not at the best place right now but I know it can only get better.  Holly Madison has gone through so much in her life. She is happier and healthier than ever.  If she can…so can I.

Every gossip magazine seems more interested in the dirty details about the Playboy lifestyle while I felt sick reading those parts.  The emotional abuse happening in all those parts made me want to cry.  That is why I love when she stops to story to talk about why she did not stop and leave that mansion. Many people online seem to miss that part but I noticed it. Her self-esteem was so low she did not think she could leave. She rather stay with the abuse because they made her think she would die out in the real world without it. Many people are falling victim to this type of abuse.  Those mind games leave scars just like physical abuse.  You can still see Holly struggling with that way of thinking in the present.  She is more confident but every so often, you see her wonder if she was overthinking situations or if they were right about her. It was great to read a book where someone talks about those emotional scars and how it is not easy to overcome. You cannot just get over it.

There is a lot more to this book than I am writing about but I HIGHLY recommend reading this memoir. You may think….yeah…another book by a former playboy bunny. Believe me this book is so much more than that. It is a look at a time where you are supposed to be finding and learning to love yourself and how that journey can go off into avenues you never dreamed they would.
